Summer vacation is over. A new school year has begun. The children’s minds are still filled with images of their vacation and they are excited about their new class. Many of them are walking or riding their bikes to school via a new route. Children are vulnerable participants in traffic.
All too often, children are the victim of an accident, particularly at the start of a new school year. They are still too inexperienced, unskilled and unknowledgeable about the rules of the road to be able to navigate them safely. This has to do with the fact that their brains are still developing and is something road users should take into account. Which is why, every late summer, the Netherlands launches a campaign called ‘School has started again’, developed in order to increase awareness of the fact that the children are out on the road once more and that everyone should exercise extra care during school hours.
