A Beautifully Preserved Stage for History, Chocolate and Headstrong People

When I think of Ghent – located nearby in Belgium, approximately 25 minutes west of Antwerp, yet only 22 kilometers from the border with the Dutch province of Zeeland – I imagine a rich cultural history, filled with colorful people, important events, fascinating liaisons and inevitable betrayals. What I wasn’t prepared for was how the stage on which these dramas took place was still so beautifully preserved.

It was all so perfectly picturesque and well-maintained that I half-expected a ticket booth for entering visitors and to see Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty bearing dainty umbrellas – surrounded by clusters of little girls, all waving their autograph booklets.
